A trip to California, Alaska and the Yellowstone Park, ca. 1891.

Bound holograph manuscript in two volumes documenting a trip taken by A. E., Edith L., and John C. Browne, and other travelling companions by rail, wagon, and steamship from Philadelphia to California, Alaska, and Yellowstone National Park, between April 20 and July 10, 1891. Volume one contains entries describing the trip from Philadelphia to California via Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona; the second volume documents the journey from California, through Oregon, Washington State, British Columbia, the Inside Passage of Alaska aboard the steamship Queen, and returning East through North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and Minnesota. Portions of the party's travel were taken as members of a Raymond & Whitcomb Inc. package tour. Browne's descriptions include a tour of an opium den in San Francisco's Chinatown, the living conditions of Alaskan natives, and the geysers and other natural phenomena of Yellowstone National Park. The volumes are heavily illustrated with souvenir photographs, snapshots, clippings from various publications, postcards, and hotel stationery letterheads.
